Capstone Project: Mission Mars — Designing a Human Colony
From the very first day of the METU Engineering Summer School, you will work in teams on an exciting challenge: designing a sustainable human colony on Mars.
Guided by our faculty members and student mentors, each team will develop its project by integrating knowledge from areas such as materials science, energy systems, life-support technologies, robotics, and artificial intelligence. Throughout the program, you will build your ideas step by step, applying what you learn in lectures, laboratories, and workshops.
At the end of the program, each team will present its Mars colony design, sharing its vision, technical approach, and solutions. These presentations will simulate real-world engineering communication, where ideas must be clearly articulated and evaluated.
Beyond technical aspects, the project also incorporates broader perspectives such as human factors, ethics, sustainability, and the societal impact of technology, offering a truly interdisciplinary experience. This capstone project is designed to bring everything together—encouraging you to think creatively, collaborate effectively, and engineer solutions for one of humanity’s most ambitious frontiers.

Model United Nations (MUN)–Inspired Engineering Simulation
On the final day of the METU Engineering Summer School, we will carry out an engaging and interactive project where you will apply the knowledge and skills you have developed throughout the program. Within this framework, and under the guidance of our faculty members and student mentors, we will conduct a Model United Nations (MUN)–inspired simulation adapted to engineering challenges.
In this simulation, you will work in teams representing different countries, institutions, or stakeholder groups, and come together around a global engineering-related agenda—such as climate change, sustainable energy, smart cities, or emerging technologies. You will engage in structured discussions, present your positions, negotiate solutions, and participate in decision-making sessions.
The simulation offers a rich opportunity to reinforce your learning, gain insight into research and policy processes, and develop your critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. Throughout the program, preparatory sessions with our mentors will help you build your arguments, conduct research, and progressively prepare for the final simulation.
